Today, August 31, 2018, my husband and I have been married for five years. I can hardly believe it! We're actually in Santa Fe celebrating a friend's wedding (more to come in another post!) Last week, however, we took some much needed time off and headed down at the beach. We popped a bottle of champagne and walked in front of the house where we were married, and as I dug my toes into the sand I thought about grateful we were to have our closest friends and family surrounding us during that special weekend. We chose to get married at the beach because it has always held a special place in both of our hearts.
We took our first trip together there in 2010 (where we consequently also said "I love you," for the first time):
he proposed to me there in 2012:
and, eventually we got married there in 2013:
The traditional gift is wood for the 5th anniversary. Sturdy and long-lasting, the medium is a salient symbol of the life you two have built over half a decade of marriage! So, it's only fitting that I share some of my favorite wood anniversary gift ideas for your spouse on your anniversary, or to gift the happy couple on their 5th wedding anniversary.
A Framed Photo in a Wooden Frame
Sure, you probably have tons of pictures of the two of you, but if you're like me, you often fail to actually print these out and frame them. They live digitally in cyberspace or on Facebook. Minted is a great source for supporting independent artists who produce unique and gorgeous art. I love this choice of a matted wooden frame with real foil gold around the photo. You can customize the mat and frame color, along with the size.
$94.50 (for a framed 8x10)
For the Practical Spouse
Maybe you met somewhere unique, or you're celebrating your anniversary in a special locale, or perhaps you want to commemorate where you got married (if you had a destination like my husband and I did!) Then these coasters are an awesome daily reminder that you'll actually use. They are functional and perfect for the practical partner who has everything. Using her passion for typography and antique maps, graphic designer Aymie Spitzer maps out four sections of a city onto each coaster. She finishes one coaster with the city's name and established date, creating a rustic metropolis in cedar. This charming set is a toast-worthy way to celebrate hometowns, new stomping grounds or favorite corners of the country. Designed in Brooklyn. Made in Florida.
Cheers to You
If your spouse or the happy couple you're gifting, enjoys wine then this is a fantastic way to celebrate their love with something useful, yet personal. It's an elegant, hand blown glass wine decanter topped with an orb-shaped wood stopper. It also comes with free engraving to personalize the piece with a block-letter monogram of your choice. I'll drink to that.
Love at First Sight...and Five Years Later
How cool are these shades? Your spouse will love the unique gift that they can actually use every day. Made from real maple wood, these wayfarers are durable and eco-friendly (for every purchase, 2 trees are planted.) They feature UV400 polarized lenses and one of the best things about these is that they float! So if your spouse loves the water, or has had a history of losing their glasses at the lake or beach (we won't name any names here...) then these are a great choice. Plus, they come back with a 100% money-back guarantee.
For the Music Lover or Sentimental Spouse
This just might be the coolest item on the list. If you want to gift something memorable, but also completely unique, this personalized sound wave art print on wood is just the thing. You simply upload a voice message or favorite song and they create a personalized soundwave graphical representation. Even better? There is a QR code attached so that your loved one can play the sound whenever they would like. I especially like the idea of using your first dance song, or even a recording of your vows! This unique print comes ready to hang and sizes up to 12" x 8" and includes a stand. Sounds perfect.
$58 (for a 5 x 7 print)
